Whitelists Explained
Opposed to whitelisting users by configuration files user by user, Space Engineers servers use Steam Groups to create a whitelisted server. All members of the specified Steam Group will be able to access and invite users to the server while online. This Guide will walk you through creating a group, as well as adding the group's ID to your servers configuration files.
Creating a Steam Group
To create a steam group, the first step is to log into your steam client. From there, hover over your steam profile link labeled by your username. Select "Groups" from the drop-down menu. This page will show you which groups you're currently a member of, as well as give you the ability to make a group. To make your new group, click "Create A Group" located at the top of the page.
Specify the information given to your group. You can choose to make it public or private, as well as other information such as a name, a vanity URL, and an abbreviation for your group. If you want to whitelist your server to only you and your friends, make sure to make this a private group. Once you've filled out this form, click create.
From there, you will be brought to your group's community page. Once you've arrived, you'll be able to edit your group profile, allowing you to further customize your page. This step is optional, but if you're looking for the common way to find your Steam Group ID, it should be listed on this page. We'll go through another way to get your Steam Group ID later in this guide.
Once your Steam Group is set up, you'll be able to invite your friends by clicking the "Invite Friends" button located near the top of your steam group page.
Finding The Steam Group ID
Once you've created your Steam Group, you'll need to find your ID. One way to do this is to follow the instructions above. Within your "Edit group profile" page, you'll find it listed there. An alternative way to do this, is to go to your public Steam Group URL and add "memberslistxml/?xml=1
" to the end of your URL. Below is an example of a modified link:
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/GSKExample/memberslistxml/?xml=1
Once you enter this into your browser and hit return or enter, you will see a line of code. The second line should be marked with the XML Element "groupID64." This number is your Steam Group ID which you will need for Space Engineers.
Applying Your Whitelist
To apply the steam group whitelist to your server, log into your TCAdmin user panel with the information which was given to you upon registration. If you've lost this information, it will be within the verification email we sent to you. Once logged in, click on "Game Services", your server's IP, then you'll be brought to your server manager.
Once there, stop your server. Once your server is stopped, click on "Configuration Files." This will open a page which shows all of your available configuration files. There should only be a couple files listed. Next to the file titled "SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg" click on the link "[Configuration Editor]" and you will be brought to our User Integrated configuration file editor.
Once there, you will need to set your server's online mode from the default, "PUBLIC" to "PRIVATE." Once that has been set, change your Steam Group ID to the number which you received in the previous step. Once you've changed any other attributes which you'd like, go ahead and save this file by clicking "Save" located at the top of the configuration editor.
The final step is to go back to your server management page, and click "Start." Your server will start with the whitelist in place.
